The Ritz-Carlton, Atlanta marked its 25th anniversary with a complete redesign of the entrance foyers, lobby, and lobby bar, now named Lumen, which features exotic, sophisticated edible cocktails, a Lumen signature cocktail, and art-themed cocktails.
The new interiors feature well-known, traditional elements transposed in an updated way, such as a Chippendale Mahogany sideboard refinished in a hand-applied gilded platinum tone; sheer shrouds wrapped around the hotel’s crystal chandeliers; and accent chairs graced with damask patterns in oversized formats.
Lumen underwent a great change. The lounge, so named for its many light effects, now greets guests with crystal chandeliers that glow red at night; seven-foot tall custom settees covered in midnight blue mohair, complete with their beaded sconces; a bar cabinet that glows blue in the evening; mirror-polished, handspun metal tables custom-designed by Brad Oldham (brother to designer Todd); beaded corkscrew floor lamps; and a custom-designed, under-lit onyx-topped communal-styled table seating up to eight.
My friend Nancy is scheduled to speak at a meeting being held at this Ritz, and I can’t wait to hear what she thinks of the new spaces. See the gallery for before and after shots.

In the battle of screwcap versus cork one of the key points for the cork side has always been the romance factor, the flourish of the corkscrew and the act of releasing the cork from the bottle. Michael Levine, the inventor and creator of The Butterfly wine opener believes he has come up with a way to bring the romance to the screwcap. The Butterfly brings a cork-like presentation to screwcap bottles with a corkscrew-like device that opens the screwcap. A video on the Bufferfly website shows how it works. It does take a simple process, unscrewing a bottle, and make it a little more complicated but at least it gives the sommelier something to do with his hands.

Rich folks share a common trait to make something as paltry as unscrewing a bottle cap an extraordinary one, with the slew of designer stuff on offer like this Swarovski crystal studded electric corkscrew from Percucina, known for its high quality…
If there’s one word to describe this chaise lounge, it would be sexy. This year, ONEOFONEHUNDRED will be launching “Indulgence” by the award winning designer Lukasz Opalinski, together with new 2009 sculptural designs, including “The Corkscrew”…

I covered Out of the Blue glass handle pulls not too long ago and I just loved them so much I had to mention these beautiful glass wine stoppers with a hidden corkscrew — also by Out of the Blue. Not only do they look like tiny pieces of accent art, but having both the stopper and corkscrew together means for one less small kitchen gadget to keep track. It would also make a perfect gift idea for the wine lover in your circle. Priced upon request.

The Wall Street Journal has created a new website just for selling wine. The newspaper has joined with Direct Wines to create WSJwine which will offer wine from all over the world. Customers will have the option to purchase individual bottles, full cases or receive ongoing shipments of mixed cases. The wine website is separate from the Wall Street Journal and isn’t connected to the Journal’s wine writing at this point. The introductory rate for the Discovery Club offers a 12-bottle case of quality wines, including Rioja, French Chablis, Californian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for $69.99 and includes tasting notes on each of the wines and a binder in which to keep them as well as a corkscrew in wooden presentation case. After this morning’s rough stock market, I’m sure a glass of wine sounds pretty appealing to many WSJ readers.
The Wall Street Journal’s move follows recent reports that Amazon.com is ramping up their efforts to get into the wine business.

At the beginning of November a platinum corkscrew was unveiled by cutlery and tableware maker Sveid. The company’s latest creation for the super-rich has the option to be bought with a solid platinum finger grip. With a price tag of €50,000 the item is surely only for the richest of show-offs at the dinner table, but the acquisition of the corkscrew does also entitle the buyer to be registered in Sveid’s owners’ list.
