Raymond Weil Parsifal Watches For 2011

Not that it is a bad thing, but a large part of Raymond Weil’s watches try to offer lower priced “alternatives” to popular Rolex models. The Parsifal has always hovering over the Rolex DayDate or Datejust market offering something a bit different, with the same functions, but still nice for a much lower price. For 2011 the Parsifal collection adds a few new members including the new “Date Automatic” and “Day-Date Automatic” (what coincidental naming practices).

Moderately sized, the cases are 39mm wide and done in steel and 18k rose gold (for the bezel, crown, elements of the bracelet, and elements on the dial). Raymond Weil opts for Roman numerals that revolve around the dial, and dial colors which asre black or silver. There will likely be other models available as well in differnet tones. Inside the watches are base Swiss Sellita SW200 automatic movements that have been modified by Raymond Weil. The new Parsifal watches are attactive, but nothing awe inspiring. The brand has again created a marketable and lower priced watch aiming at those who don’t want to spend Rolex prices but still want a handsome Swiss watch of this variety.

Burgundy is all in the family-until now.

Under French inheritance law, in the Napoleonic Code originally established in 1804, property is inherited by bloodline. That makes it virtually impossible to disinherit an offspring and that is the main reason behind the array of vineyards the size of large postage stamps that make up the Burgundy region, as the sons and daughters of sons and daughters each wind up with a piece of land here and there.

Imagine our surprise, then, to learn that the Burgundy House Cottin Freres, which brings us the well-known Laboure-Roi brand, sold seven hectares (nearly 17 acres) of Meursault vineyards, to a group of investors headed by New York sommelier Robert Bohr.

barbour
EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW: Two icons of authentic sporting style come together in classic British outerwear brand Barbour’s cool new limited edition collection designed in homage to the great Steve McQueen, set to launch this fall. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of their iconic International clothing range, which the King of Cool wore while motorcycle racing in the 1960s, the capsule collection of 19 pieces features several new jackets, shirts and sweaters inspired by archival photos of the actor racing motorbikes and driving his collection of classic sports cars. McQueen first donned a Barbour International jacket when he represented the United States team in the 1964 International Six Day Trials (ISDT) motorcyle race in East Germany. The ISDT (now known as the International Six Days Enduro), one of the most challenging moto racing events in the world, requires each rider to cover 200 miles a day over hellish terrain.

Prior to the event in ‘64 Steve McQueen and other members of U.S. team stopped off in London and bought six-pocket Barbour Internationals, derived from a one-piece racing suit first offered by the firm in 1936, as a defence against the vagaries of European weather. McQueen quickly became enamored of the International’s weather-defying qualities and rugged utility, wearing it in several grueling moto races over the years. Classic images of McQueen in his Barbour grace the linings of the jackets in the new collection. Standout pieces include the Penton (above, $799) and Bud ($599) waxed cotton jackets featuring stars and stripes linings and U.S. flags on the left chest, faithfully recreating the jacket that McQueen wore in the ‘64 ISDT. Two other wax cotton jackets, the Trophy ($429) and the Greenham ($399), reflect McQueen’s effortless style on and off the racecourse. [cont’d]

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Geographic Watch For 2011

While not totally new, the 2011 Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Geographic is a refresh of the popular world time watch from the popular Swiss watch maker. With slicker face that feels more refined in its presentation, the watch still offers a valuable features set. Aside from the time, the watch offers the date, power reserve indication for the movement, and has a full featured world time. The world time function even has allowances for cities that rely on daylight saving times. The second time zone that is associated with the city selector at the bottom of the dial is shown on a subsidiary time dial that is in a 12 hour format. Next to the dial is a small 24 hour indictor that functions as an AM/PM indicator so that you know whether it is day or night in that other city.

Operating the functions is rather effortless, with Jaeger-LeCoultre almost perfecting the experience of having a straight forward world timer. Inside the watch is a JLC in-house made Calibre 939 automatic movement. The steel or 18k pink gold case remains modest in size at 39mm wide - though JLC does offer larger, more sporty models with similar functions. The watch comes on black or brown alligator strap. The Master Geographic has a lovely, timeless appeal that suits the regular traveler well - and is even nicer for 2011.

The year 1855 turns out to have been a very green year for wine. Two Bordeaux estates that gained classification status that year are the first of the “Growth Estates” to gain 21st century organic certification.

First growth Chateaux Guiraud (Sauterne) and Fifth Growth Chateau Pontet-Canet (Pauillac) were each recognized by France’s Agence Bio (AB) as certifiably organic producers, the former beginning with its 2011 vintage and the latter beginning with its 2010 wines.

Depending on the vintage, Guiraud’s wines are priced from two to four digits per bottle, with an average across vintages of $45 to $121. With one exception, Pontet-Canet bottle prices have generally been in the triple digits with an average across vintages of $62 to $172.

The two venerable Bordeaux wine producers of the Gironde River area were inducted into the original 1855 Bordeaux classification under different names. In 1766, a merchant named Pierre Guiraud bought La Maison Noble du Bayle, which was the estate’s name when it achieved First Growth status for white wine. Originally named Canet, Pontet-Canet was established in the early 18th century by Jean-François de Pontet, royal governor of the Médoc. Canet gained Fifth Growth status for red wine.

Victoria Beckham Leather and nubuck shoulder bag
The Leather and Nubuck Shoulder Bag is another simple, streamlined classic from Victoria Beckham. I do like it but I can’t fight the feeling that for evening it’s on the boring side and could even be construed as a bit matronly (although Victoria herself is anything but) so I would stick with using it for very chic day looks where it can really shine. It’s made of black leather with a taupe nubuck inset on the front, has both gold and silvertone hardware, a shoulder strap that’s removable and adjustable, and a two-compartment interior with a somewhat unusual ‘envelope’ style pocket with snap closure. $2,600

KnickerMailKnickerMail is not your typical luxury gift but one that takes the stereotypical Valentine’s Day lingerie to a new (and slightly tongue-in-cheek) level with their mail order lingerie ‘greeting cards’ geared to those looking to send something sexier, more fun, and less typical than the usual teddy bear and red roses (although you could certainly send those in addition). Hand-made of silk satin and available in three colors each pair comes delivered in a pretty, slightly shimmery envelope complete with handwritten note and message of your choice. Admittedly not for everyone but for the right girl it could be a fun way to shake things up a bit and get a smile and a giggle this Valentine’s Day. £29.99

Today’s home had a $1.5 million price cut a few months back but that’s not the only reason I’m featuring it. This large home is in the gated community of Snapper Creek Lakes in Coral Gables, Florida. This is an older subdivision, originally developed in the 1950s. It includes a privately owned boat basin with a full-time dock master and security. It offers direct access to Biscayne Bay. Today’s home is a six-bedroom plantation style home with delightful wide porches. It’s a colorful home with plenty of hand-painted details including a vine mural in the wine cellar. Although it has a luxurious feel with a formal dining room and grand spaces, there is also a warmth to this home that makes it more appealing than some of Florida beige faux Tuscans. The property also includes a pool, dock and two-bedroom guest house. Other nice features include a media room, family room and a generator to cope with potential power outages. This property is now listed at $10.999 million.

Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph Watch

The newest iteration of the Classic Fusion “classy” watch from Hublot will have a bi-compax chronograph. The Classic Fusion Chronograph is a more simple chronograph in comparison to the Big Bang or King Power styles with the same complications - though it is not by any means a simple watch. Hublot offers it with a matte black dial and either titanium or 18k red gold applied hour markers and hands. The watch case comes in one size of 45mm wide, and will be offered in titanium or 18k red gold. The watch feels like just what the Classic Fusion needed to have that little extra bit of visual interest. Inside the watch will be an Hublot HUB1143 automatic movement.

Ritmo Mundo Persepolis Watches Go Gem Crazy

These are like crazy colored candy - there is something almost charmingly juvenile about the look and (massive) size of these watches. A woman putting one on her wrist will feel like a girl again as the large watch dwarfs her forearm and offers an almost amusingly obnoxious display of sparkling colors. These Ritmo Mundo Persepolis models are in the “Multi-Gem” collection, but I like to call them “wild gem” watches. They have steel (and possibly other metal) cases totally covered with a variety of gem-stones. All Persepolis watches features double-sides faces that flip around in the case. The pictured model has two automatic movements that are partially skeletonized. There are also quartz models as well. Like I said, the watch is large - really large. The pictured model is over 50mm wide (try sporting that ladies). Though I think there are a few smaller versions as well. Prices for Ritmo Mundo Persepolis Multi-Gem models start at about $11,000, and go up to $45,000 for those like the above version with gems all over the dial and case.

Piaget Polo FortyFive Perpetual Calendar Watch

At SIHH 2011 I got sneak peak at Piaget’s upcoming Polo FortyFive Perpetual Calendar watch. The Piaget Polo FortyFive watch that came out a few years ago has been a remarkable success for the brand in giving it a sport’s watch. With chronograph and three-hand variants available, Piaget has designed a Polo FortyFive model with an in-house made perpetual calendar automatic movement.

With an impressive level of symmetry, the dial displays the time, retrograde date, retrograde day of the week, month, power reserve indicator for the movement, time with subsidiary seconds, second timezone, leap-year indicator, and a clever moon phase indicator. All on the dial that is is a few shades of black with while and rose gold.

The 45mm wide case is in titanium with 18k rose gold accents. More 18k rose gold is used on the dial for the hands and some dial rings. At first glance the watch looks a bit like a complex chronograph but actually has an impressive level of features in it. A very utilitarian touch that I appreciate is labeled inset pushers on the side of the case. Perpetual calendar watches often have pin pushers on the side of the case to adjust the calendar functions. Piaget thoughtfully opted to label them to make adjusting the watch less burdensome. See more images of this upcoming Piaget Polo FortyFive watch in the gallery below.

Nancy Gonzalez Crocodile Long Clutch
Things are going uber-vibrant this spring and Nancy Gonzalez is hopping on board with both feet with this Crocodile Long Clutch design. Reminiscent of a pencil case it’s obviously very long but it’s also quite shallow and measures a grand total of 13″ long by 5″ tall by 2″ deep. Aside from what seems to be Nancy’s favorite crocodile leather it has no other features, straps, dangles, or embellishments except a high-gloss finish, a magnetic top fastening, and an equally bright pink suede lining with a skinny little interior pouch pocket. $1,200

Big giving is back at one of the year’s grandest wine events. The Naples Winter Wine Festival in Naples, Florida was held over the weekend. It raised $12 million for Collier County’s underprivileged and at-risk children during the live auction of 70 one-of-a-kind auction lots. The total was healthily above last year’s $8.1 million and over double the $5.1 million raised in economically gloomy 2009. The total nearly grazed the $12.2 million record set in 2006. The festival has brought in over $94.5 million since it began in 2001.

Approximately 580 festival guests were seated under a giant tent set on the grand lawn of The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples bidding on lots that ranged from $30,000 to $1 million. The million-dollar lot was an 8-foot-tall bronze sculpture, Reina Mariana, by artist Manolo Valdés. The 2,000-pound sculpture had traveled to the festival grounds from New York City’s Columbus Circle, where it had been on display. The top wine lot, modestly called Perfection, was a total of 100 bottles of 100-point wine in a custom cabinet. It equaled the highest bid of a wine-only lot in the festival’s history at $400,000. A 39-bottle collection of Sine Qua Non, many in large format and including 100-point wines, captured a winning bid of $160,000; a 25-year complete vertical of Shafer’s Hillside Select and 24 bottles of the vintner’s Silver Anniversary Sensation, when released in 2013, resulted in a high bid of $150,000; and four magnums of Colgin Cellars IX Estate Napa Valley Red Wine went for $130,000.

Super Bowl XLV is just over a week away and the rivalry between Green Bay and Pittsburgh has heated up. The Milwaukee Art Museum and the Carnegie Museum of Art have decided to make a friendly wager on the football game. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that each is offering up an Impressionist work of art. If the Packers win the Carnegie Museum will send over Renoir’s “Bathers with Crab” for a temporary loan where visitors can see it and not only take in some beautiful art but gloat a bit too. Should the Steelers prove victorious, “Boating on the Yerres” by Gustav Caillebotte will be taking the journey to the Carnegie.

This is the second year in a row that art critic Tyler Green has prompted a bet. Last year the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art squared off which resulted “The Fifth Plague of Egypt”, 1800, a landscape by British artist J.M.W. Turner spending a few months in new Orleans where it was displayed with a Lombardi-trophy-shaped sign designating the triumph.

During 2011’s SIHH event, Montblanc has a few “stars” of the show, but one of them was certainly this limited edition table clock made in cooperation with German clock maker Erwin Sattler. The clock is officially called the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Horological TimeWriter Table Clock. It combines a few important things for the brand, and will be made as a limited edition set of just 19 pieces.

The clock starts with…. the clock. It is made in cooperation of Munich based Erwin Sattler. The clock replicates the look of the now famous Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph watch collection. The dial combines the time, a chronograph, and two power reserve indicators. The clock is sort of like two clocks in one mechanically speaking. Both set of parts are in the same unit. As such, the table clock has two balance springs, two timing mechanisms, and two barrels to hold power. Why two? One is for telling the time, while the other is for the chronograph mechanism. The Horological TimeWriter has a 15 day power reserve and must be wound via the back of the clock.

Actress Rose McGowan who appeared on Charmed and has also appeared in movies including Grindhouse and Jawbreaker has listed her home in the Los Feliz area of Lso Angeles for around what she paid for it. McGowan bought the home in 2004 for $1.85 million. The home is one of the many older homes in the area, a coral-colored home with Spanish and Moroccan influences that dates back to 1928. McGowan has been true to the home’s roots, decorating it in a vintage style that includes a neon Brown Derby sign. There are four bedrooms but it looks like one has been pressed into service as a dressing room for the star’s outfits.

The home has a baronial style entry that leads to a sep-down living room with vaulted beamed ceilings, peg-and-groove wood plank floors, and arched windows. The family room has coffered ceilings and large formal dining room. Stained glass details, wrought iron staircases and bathrooms tiled in vibrant colors are all part of a home with great vintage style. The master suite also includes a balcony. The listing is with Tracy T. Maltas, Partners Trust Brentwood for $1.5 million.
