ruinart champagneWhen it comes to Champagne, the French have got it right: they drink it all the time. In the US, we tend to save it for special occasions, like weddings or New Year’s Eve. That’s too bad. Because Champagne is truly one of the most versatile wines.

That’s probably what Jeffrey Pogash had in mind when he organized a Champagne and hot dog tasting the other day. Yes, the lowly hot dog sharing the table with the most prestigious of beverages!

And these weren’t just any old Champagnes. Pogash, director of communications at Moët Hennessy USA, the wine and spirits division of luxury purveyor LVMH, brought along some bottles of Krug and Ruinart, along with the more amply-produced Dom Pérignon, Moët & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot.

Then again, these weren’t your standard issue dirty water dogs, either. The tasting was held at Bark, a year-old Brooklyn joint that features artisanal hot dogs made from locally raised pork and beef (none of the nasty bits either — we’re talking shoulder and jowl) braised in smoked lard butter and stuffed into natural casings. In fact, all the ingredients used at Bark, from the pork to the cheese to the heirloom baked beans, are sustainably, lovingly even, from the sound of it, produced by some earnest local soul.

Still, could these haute dogs stand up to some of France’s finest bubbles? An 8-course tasting menu (nine, including dessert) would tell.

The Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo has a prime view of one of the most best corners in all of Formula 1 - it’s the tightest turn of any track in the entire Formula 1 calendar, turned so tight around on itself that the cars’ steering has to be modified to cope. In years past it was called the Lowe’s Hairpin, but no longer. Thenceforth, it will be known as the Fairmont Hairpin, and the hotel has a plans to offer amenities and entertainment as exciting as the race itself.

The completion of a €46 million renovation has graced the Fairmont with a new top-floor restaurant called L’Horizon with 360-degree views of the Principality. The 5-star menu includes vegetables grown in the Fairmont’s gardens in the countryside surrounding Monaco, which means the food probably tastes exceedingly rich in more ways than one. When not at the repast, there’s the Willow Fitness Center overlooking the Riviera, the Willow Stream Spa with 8 treatment rooms and a sauna and Hammam. You can even order Adidas t-shirts, shorts and shoes from the hotel for your workout, and the Fairmont will provide an MP3 player with EMI tunes to enjoy while you tread on the mill.

For GP weekend, May 13-16, the resort’s got two packages: one for the historic grand prix that gets you a bed from April 30 to May 2, and one for the Formula 1 weekend with flexibility from one to four nights. Another benefit of staying in-house is you’ll have a better chance of getting into the Fairmont’s Salle d’Or ballroom, where Flavio Briatore’s Sardinia-based Billionaire’s Club will be hosting parties from 11:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. And you can bet that any action that might be missing on track will be more than made up for at the Salle d’Or…

Meghan Farrell JewelryJewelry designers find inspiration in all kinds of places, and for psychology student Meghan Farrell it was the mind and its many mysterious functions that became the muse for her MF ‘Ologies’ Jewelry collection. Made of precious metals only, no gems or jewels to be seen, each piece in the line represents something different. The “Held Together Pendant” shown here represents both stability (the wheel) and security (the safety pin), the “Cross-Kiss Ring” represents a kiss, and the “Neurology Pendant” stands for the power of the mind and the will to survive. Pieces range in price depending on material from $230 - $1400.

bottega veneta bag
This year the annual Salone del Mobile is being held from April 14th to 19th at the Rho exhibition center in Milan, Italy. There will be every type of furnishing imaginable on display from classical to modern design with an emphasis placed on high-end quality products. Last year over 300,000 people attended, and while the event is aimed at industry professionals, the show is open to the public on Sunday the 18th of April.

Bottega Veneta has chosen this venue to unveil some of their new design initiatives during the week long show. The Italian company known world wide for exquisite leather goods, particularly their woven bags, has chosen to celebrate Japanese culture and craft with a student design competition and various other collaborations with Japanese artisans. The lucky students from the University of Tokyo whose winning designs are chosen will be able to see them available for purchase in the company’s Ginza store after the conclusion of Salone del Mobile. The collaboration seems to be a natural one, as Bottega Veneta has always shown an affinity for supporting the craftsman of luxury items, even opening a school in 2006 to train and support future generations of leather craftsmen. It makes sense that the company would be prone to exploring a relationship with another country’s artisans.

Balmain Slashed Army Shirt
Worn and weather-beaten is always interesting when it comes to clothes because it usually means they’ve really been lived in and there are some good stories to be had. This Slashed Army T-Shirt from Balmain is the short-cut way to achieve that look, coming pre-destroyed so you get all the well-worn character with none of the experience. All for just $1,625.

Personally I think this look goes in with torn jeans — the holes are only cool if they happened naturally. If this was a t-shirt that was actually worn by an army guy and got all those tears out in the field I would totally love it. But alas it’s not, just 100% cotton with “distressed hole detail.” Available online at Net-A-Porter.

swatch mother's day

Mother’s day is tough for gift giving. If you are anything like me, you don’t want to spend too much money, but you need to show mom that you care right? It is basically like Valentine’s Day, without any romance (and all that comes with it). So what is someone to do who doesn’t have a mom who is specifically asking for that new toaster oven? Well Swatch has you covered with a new limited production watch for Mother’s Day this year. A nice baby blue numeraled Swatch watch with an easy to read, but feminine dial, and a matching textured blue leather strap. The dial is in steel and polished, with a Swiss quartz movement. Size is 33mm wide which is good for just about any female wrist (while not being too small a watch). The Swatch Heartfelt comes complete with a shopping tote - because all moms can find good use for another tote bag. Really a well designed piece that is good enough to leave most any mother satisfied. Get a Swatch Heartfelt watch online here.

spring dresses
There is no denying that with the arrival of Spring comes the feeling of renewal. Cleaning out the clutter in our homes and minds while starting the season with a fresh outlook and sense of excitement for the warm weather. And of course, who can forget about shedding away the winter gear and replacing it with skirts, dresses, tank tops, shorts and open toed sandals? Finally, our skin is able to see the sun and feel the warmth once again. So perhaps this may be a bit melodramatic but I am so ready for warm spring and hot summer days. To kick off my excitement, and I’m sure others out there too, here is a colorful collection of dresses that scream - thank you for sunny days!

Featured above is eco-friendly fashion extraordinaire Stella McCartney’s Chiffon Rose Nari Dress. This pretty floral sleeveless dress features a color palette that would look beautiful against all skin tones, pleats and an exaggerated scalloped hem that offers volume and understated sexiness. Price: $2,325.
